Beginner’s Guide to Inner Healing

What does Inner Healing really mean?

Up to a couple of years ago I had never heard of inner healing. It was when I started on my own journey of self-discovery and having an interest in spirituality did I start to understand how important it is that we all do inner healing work. In the world that we live in unfortunately we all adopt negative belief systems along the way that do not serve us and this world encouraged us to suppress negative emotions rather than to face them. The thing with inner healing is that it combats both physical and mental issues because dis-ease and distress starts in your spirit or subtle energy body first, this is what is referred to as our ‘inner world’ and then it works its way down to the physical body.  Inner healing means turning inwards and facing all the things in your life that have caused you pain, frustration, anger, fear that you never fully processed so that you can fully heal those parts of yourself. It basically means freeing up energy that is stuck in your system that is repeating similar traumatic experiences for you. ‘Shadow work’ is also part of inner healing work. Our shadow is the part of ourselves that we do not like to show to the world and we often suppress it and deny its existence but the more we deny it the bigger that part gets.  Just by acknowledging these parts of ourselves begins the healing process. The outer world is a reflection of the inner world. It is a mirror and you can’t change the reflection in a mirror, but you can change the person looking at the mirror by going on the inner quest and then the reflection changes.

I had no idea of all the things that were playing out in the background of my being that were actually hindering my well-being because they were all buried in my subconscious mind and because I wasn’t necessarily consciously bothered about past issues and even had forgotten some of these memories.  I assumed that meant that I had dealt with my past. I mean if you cannot remember your trauma surely that means it is gone, and it will not affect you anymore? WRONG!  Anything buried in the subconscious mind does not stay buried. These memories get triggered over and over again when we experience anything that is at all similar (even if it is to a very lesser degree) to the original issue and even if you don’t consciously remember the events, this is key, because a lot of people don’t remember but it is still playing out in their lives in certain situations and dynamics, basically repeating old patterns over and over again.  Which is why we sometimes overreact with certain situations because we are not just reacting to that incident, we are also subconsciously reacting to all the other previous incidents that were never properly healed.

What happens when we do Inner Healing work?

Several things happen with inner healing work, firstly you are releasing the energy that is suppressed and that is causing the distress in the first place by shining light on that part of yourself so that it can naturally leave your system, that is the only real pain killer there is. Suppressed energy (emotions) is one of the biggest causes of disease in our world.  Most people find every way to distract themselves from feeling their emotions, which is really damaging in the long run. Secondly you are reprogramming the subconscious mind of any limiting beliefs or old repeating patterns that do not serve you because these are all also connected to old buried trauma too.  You become a better version of yourself, more emotionally balanced, less triggers, more peace.  Because you are releasing energy that has been blocked and reprogramming your subconscious mind with more positive beliefs, your vibration automatically rises from doing this work which means that you will manifest more positive things into your life. This is one of the amazing side effects of inner healing work, the law of attraction starts working for you rather than against you.  You are basically clearing your energy of all that does not serve you which gives space for all that does.

How do you do Inner Healing work?

I have created a list below of some inner healing exercises and techniques:

  • Daily meditation practice

This should be the very first thing you begin on your journey of inner healing.  Allocate 10 minutes a day to yourself, sit somewhere quiet and close your eyes and take deep breaths and just listen to your inner world, your inner being. That is it! Just let that be your exercise at the start, commit to 10 minutes a day to just sit with yourself and listen to your inner world.  If you would like more information on meditation, check out my blog here

  • Daily meditation with affirmations

Meditation is key to reprogramming the subconscious mind.  It is in this deep relaxed state that you can speak directly to the subconscious mind because the conscious mind takes a back seat.  The subconscious mind works on repetition which is why reciting positive affirmations in meditation daily is very powerful.  Make a list of positive affirmations of things you would like to be or invite into your life and say them in the present tense, for example, if you would like to invite in love, say ‘I accept only loving, healthy relationships now’ or if you would like to have more self esteem say ‘I am so proud of myself and I honor all that I have achieved’  or ‘I am loved and accepted for the person I truly am’  or ‘I am worthy & I deserve the best now’.  When you are happy with your list, grab your voice recorder and record these affirmations.  Make sure to leave a minute or two at the beginning of the recording to take a few deep breaths to get you into the relaxed state first before you start the affirmations.  If you do not like listening to the sound of your own voice, then check out some guided affirmation meditations on YouTube instead.  Try listening to these affirmations with headphones first thing in the morning and just before you fall asleep at night for best results.

  • ‘Cutting the chords’ meditation

When I feel hurt or angry towards a person the first thing I usually do is this type of meditation.

Close your eyes, take 3 or 4 deep breaths, holding for the count of four and then exhaling fully out.

Imagine a sphere of golden light surrounding you, then imagine the person that has caused you to feel these emotions sitting directly across from you in the sphere.

Feel in your body where there is any heaviness, then imagine an energetic chord coming from that part of your body and connecting with that person and then see yourself disconnecting the chord from your body and imagine it disappearing completely into thin air.

Feel into your body again and if you feel heaviness anywhere else do the same process again. When you have finished cutting the chords do the following:

Now speak to this person and tell them that you forgive them for hurting you and that you forgive yourself too for whatever negativity that you have held onto because of it.

Now imagine a beam of light going from your heart centre to their heart centre and back again and say ‘the light in you is equal to the light in me, now let us both go in peace’  Imagine that person smiling at you, saying sorry and saying goodbye.

Bring your awareness back to the room, wiggle your toes, wiggle your fingers, and open your eyes.

Every time you feel hurt or annoyed by someone instead of trying to distract yourself from the anger or frustration do this meditation instead. It will help to disconnect that negative energy that is energetically linking you both.

  • ‘Rewrite the Past’ meditation

What you will be doing in this meditation is rewriting the script of all the things in your life that have caused you regret, shame, anger, hurt.   Do this meditation for each situation and keep doing it until you start to feel some acceptance around it.

Close your eyes, take 3 or 4 deep breaths, holding for the count of four and then exhaling fully out.

Imagine a sphere of golden light surrounding you

Now imagine the situation that is causing you pain or regret and then imagine the result being a positive outcome instead, whatever that means to you, imagine it playing out in your head.

Bring your awareness back to the room, wiggle your toes, wiggle your fingers, and open your eyes.

The more you do this the more you are convincing your subconscious mind that this is what has played out and it will no longer hold on to the negativity from the actual event.  The subconscious mind does not know what is real and what is not so that is why this is effective.  Eventually you will feel peace around that situation.

  • Journaling

After doing a ‘cutting the chords meditation’ and if I still feel angry and upset, I will take my journal out and I will write out exactly how I am feeling and why I am feeling what I am feeling.  The reason I do this is because it is a powerful way of getting the emotions out of my system.  This is what we need to always aim to do when something triggers and upsets us, we need to find a healthy space to be able to deal with those difficult emotions and release it from our system without hurting anyone in the process. Otherwise we automatically try to suppress or distract away from them which I have already discussed causes bigger issues later i.e. we end up exploding in rage or causing ill health to ourselves. I then tear up the page in my journal. I end this by writing a gratitude list for all that I am grateful for in my life to balance out the energy.

  • Inner Child Therapy

A lot of our issues in adulthood stem from childhood trauma.  I did a whole blog on this subject so check that out here for more details.

  • Reiki

Having regular reiki sessions is a great way to heal any trauma stuck in your system.  It unblocks any stuck energy so that your life force energy can freely flow through your system which keeps you emotionally and physically well and keeps the chakras balanced. I would recommend that everyone get Reiki 1 attuned as it is all about self-healing which means you can include it as part of your own daily self-care ritual and it will help clear your energy field.   If you are interested to hear more, check out my blog on reiki here

  • EFT/Tapping

Emotional Freedom Technique Aka Tapping is another effective way of clearing out old trauma that may be stopping you from moving forward.  You are basically tapping into the vibration by acknowledging the trauma you experienced as it is being done so that you can release it.  You can learn to do tapping on yourself or you can do a session with an EFT therapist.

  • Quantum Healing Hypnosis

This is also known as past life regression.  Sometimes we carry issues over from past lives and just continue the cycle from lifetime to lifetime unless we acknowledge and heal it.  If you find that other methods of inner healing are not helping to improve your life circumstances and the same patterns are playing out, then I would recommend that you try a Quantum Healing Hypnosis session.  This is especially helpful when we cannot remember the traumatic event or events that our causing these patterns to play out in our lives.  I have also done a whole blog on this subject that you might find interesting, you can find that here.

  • Crystal Healing

Crystals provide a form of healing that works alongside your body’s inner healer. It helps to brings things back into balance. Crystals are concerned with subtle energies; a lot of their work is done through realigning the aura that surrounds the physical body and cleansing the chakras. The mind is closely involved in crystal healing. Belief in the process aids the process however you do not have to believe but just have an open mind. By placing the associated crystal on the chakra will help to unblock the energy within the chakra and aids the flow of life force energy around the body. Meditating with healing crystals will help you find that balance within and will aid in your emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. If you are drawn to crystal healing, check out my chakra healing crystal collection here

There are many other inner healing and shadow work modalities out there, but these are the ones that I have tried and tested and have found helpful and have worked positively in my life. Remember that inner healing is a life long journey. If you are new to Inner healing work, I hope this blog has helped give you more insight and clarity on what it means and what it does. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to leave a comment below or drop me a line via our contact form on the website.  Many thanks for reading.

Best wishes
